Why was religion important in Elizabethan England?

-Religious teachings and practices guided people's morals, behaviour and understanding of the world 

-Birth, marriage and death were all marked by religious ceremonies

-People believed going to church, attending pilgrimages and confessing sins reduced time in purgatory

-Religious festivals marked the agricultural year and were seen as essential to a good harvest

-Protestants were found in northern Europe, the Netherlands, Scandinavia and Germany

-1530's protestants fleeing persecution in Europe had landed in England

-Some Protestants became Puritans

-North of England especially Durham, Yorkshire and lancashire remained catholic

-Reformation divided the Christian Church between Catholics and Protestants from 1517
