  • Pickering " Edwards first reign was a turbulent one, taht saw further civil war"

The North

  • Edward gave full military reponsibility to Warwick
  • King Henry - in the north lacastrian supporters
  • Edward PoWales - in Scotland
  • Sastle of Alnwick and Bamburgh remianed Lancastrian
  • Edward was lenient to the Beauforts and the Percy's - reversed attainders in 1461
  • 1461 April - Marched to Durham - little resitance - Warwick regained Alnwick castle in Northumberland
  • 1461 October - Pembroke castle was one by William Herbert - Jasper tudor + Exeter defeated in 1461 at Caernarvon
  • 1462 - Anjou  invades from Scotland - supported by Percy defeated at Bamburgh  - flees to France
  • 1463 - France signs a treaty with England - Stops supporting pretenders
  • 1464 - Hedgley Moor and Hexham defetats Percy and Lancastrian resitance

Edward Widens his Power Base

1464 - passed 113 attainders after victory at Hexham

  • Warwick gained huge amounts of terriotry - Duchy of lancaster + East and West Marches of Northumberland - giving him control of the North
  • Wiliam Hastings was given powerful amounts of lands in the Midlands
  • William Herbert became viceroy of Wales + granted many lands in south Wales
  • John Neville  - given Kent + parts of South west England (Goodman saw him as "the most distingushed Military Commander in the War of the Roses"
  • His death in 1463 passed lands onto Humphrey Stafford in 1463

Built up a powerbase of allies

  • Herbert and Hastings were to prove highkly loyal
  • However, Warwick gained an excessive amount of lands and power making him an Increased Threat

The Woodville Marriage

  • 1464 1st may - married Elizabeth Woodville - kept Secret until september
  • Pendrill " Major Mistake - Pickering "Irrisponsible and detrimental"
  • No Political advantage through the Marriage
  • In 1461 new French King made alliance possible with either France or Burgundy
  • Scince 1463 treaty (which Warick Negotiated) Warick gained close Friendship with the king - began making plans for wedding French royal Family - collapsed due to Edwards marriage
  •  Alliance with France - ended possible Lancastrian support + Powerful ally - also removed threat from Auld alliance
  • Burgundy - Would gain support from being anti-French + excellent trade realtions
  • Allied with Burgundy - Margret sister to Charles the Bold 1468

Woodvilles

  • Herbert + Buckingham married Woodvilles
  • Her Brother John married countess Norfolk
  • Brother made Bishop + Earl rivers made Lord Treasurer
  • However, Waricks brother George was made Bishop of York
  • Policy allienated Warick but brought a new base of Powerful allies (However, disliked by nobility

Rebellion of Warwick

Wawrick

  • 1469 - Warwick had decided on Rebellion in leauge with Clarence
  • Married Isabel Edwards neice in 1469 July
  • Warick encouraged rising in Yorkshire in July
  • As well issued a manifesto realsing the King from Poor Government
  • arrived at Canterbury with an Army 16th July
  • 26th July met at Edgecot against Herbert - Edward disperses support - and is Captured
  • Warick excutes Earl Rivers and John Woodville
  • Warick could not govern without the Kings Support and popular rebellions forced Wawrick to release Edward 
  • Edward raised Forces and declared Warick and Clarence traitors - defeating their army in Liconshire
  • Warick fled to France

The End of The Revolt

Waricks Invasion

  • 1470 - Warwick invaded England
  • He gained the support of the French King Louis XI - reconcilated Anjou and Wawrick
  • Warwick pledged to restore Henry
  • Started a rebellion in yorkshire - forced king to move up north
  • Warwick invades devon and seizes London - now a Lancastrian has signifcant support- such as Oxford and Montague
  • Edwards allies desert him and he flees to Flanders
  • Crowns Herny VI king in October 1470

Edwards Invasion

  • The now alliance between France and England - pushed Burgundy to support Edward
  • Charles supplies Edward 50,000 crowns
  • Edward invades Yorkshire and meets Warwick at Barnet - Edward has 5,000 - Warwick 7,000 - However Clarence aids Edward with 12,000 in return for a pardon
  • Edward takes London
  • Warwick is killed

Battle of Teweksbury

  • 4th may 1471
  • Edward PoW vs Edward IV
  • Edward PoW signifcantly weaker than Edward
  • is Defeated at Tewkesbury and is Killed
  • Edward IV returns to London as King
  • April 1471 murders Herny VI in the Tower

Edward now reigns as King Supreme without Lancastrian oppostion
