Home causes working class achievement

Material deprevation:
-WC pupils living in homes that are dark, unclean and overcrowded might struggle as insufficient space makes studying at home more difficult
-Poorer parents are less likely to have access to pre-school or nursery facilities which may affect child’s development
-Low income means educational books and toys are not bought and computers or internet access aren’t available at home
-Pupils from poorer families are more likely to have part-time jobs which might take up studying time

Cultural deprivation:
-WC pupils have lack of values and inadequate socialisation
-Differences in language - WC use restricted code which is simple and limited whereas MC use elaborated code which is more complex and is used in school
-WC parents show lack of interest in their child’s education
-No help or encouragements from parents as they would be busy working
-WC subculture -values differ compared to MC so they don’t have the motivation to push themselves in education
-Immediate gratification - the desire to experience pleasure without delay
-Fatalism - the belief that all events are predetermined and therefore inevitable
-Collectivism - interested in the needs of the group instead of the individual
