Ectoparasites

Fleas - Ctenocephalides felis

Condtions: 

 - anemia

 - hyersensitivity 

 - FAD

Lice

Louse infestation = pediculosis 

Transmit by close contact

Two types:  - biting  - sucking 

Egg laid on host and attatch to hair shaft, hatch into nymphs

sucking louse = lingonathus setosus - host is dog 

biting louse = trichodectes canis - dog, felicola subrostratus - cat

Dipteran Flies

Larvae cause myiasis.

Risk factors: obesity, urine scalding, diarrhoea

Ticks

ixodes ricinus - sheep

ixodes hexagonus - hedgehog

rhipicephalus sanguineus - brown dog tick

dermacentor reticulatus - ornate dog tick

blood sucking arachids

inject saliva and any pathogens in salivary glands are transmitted

mites

harvest mite - neotrombicular autumnnalis

ear mites - otodectes cynotis - thickk brown discharge 

rabbit ear mites - psoroptes cinculi

Cheyletiella

surface mite

causes exfoliative dermatitis

c.yasguri - dogs

c.blakei - cats

c.parasitovirax - rabbits

zoonotic

Demodex

subsurface mite

lives in hair follicles

clinical signs: pustular demodiosis - swollen skin with pustules, pachydermasis

                      squamous demodicosis - desquamous and alopecia, skin become blue/grey

mange mites

two types: sarcoptes scabei and notoedres cati

sarcoptes scabei

- cause scabei/saecoptic mange

- very contagious and zoonotic

- mainly dogs

- intense pruiritis, alopecia and scaling

notoedres cati

- notoedric mange/cat scabies

- maily effects head - intense pruritis, alopecia and crusting
