Haiti: Responses

Short term responses-

-the UN sent troops- lack of trained people in LIC

-moved 220 000 from capital to less damaged cities- helped control the capital although this should be done before earthquake to reduce risks

-public moved people from rubble- people relied on non trained help

long term responses-

-dependant on aid- Haiti dodnt have enough money to rebuild

-buildings built to higher standards- prevent risks from further earthquakes

-cash for work scheme- allowed Haitians to earn money by helping to clean up the mess of the earthquake

Christchurch: responses

short term responses-

-field hospitals set up- medical help was given away from buildings to reduce further risk

-australlian government sent 70 help officers

-priminister sent a search and rescue team to save people as fast as possible to prevent deaths

long term responses-

-red cross offered grants for families with children- allowed families to get back on their feet

-school classrooms were shared- there werent enough classrooms for all the children so education was at a lower standard.

LIC/HIC: comparison

- affects greater in LIC (Haiti): more densely populated area, lower quality hospitals to treat people, less money for planning and protection etc, more threats eg. lower quality infrastructure= more likely to collapse and therefore kill someone.

-more aid given to LIC: poorer country so less money to spend on rebuilding. affects were also greater due to poor infrastructure
