Types of seismic waves

?

Types of Wave - Primary waves

The vibrations realsed from the energy relased from the pressure which has built up

Some can travel through the body of the earth, whereas some travel on the surface

P waves - Primary waves

- travel the fastest

- longitutindal waves - vibrating the direction travel - pushes and pulls through the rock

- can travel through both soild and liquids - theres can be detected on the other side of the eath

- compressoinal waves

Secondary waves - S waves

- transverse waves - up and down and side to side

- causes more damage than P waves

- slower than P waves

- can only travel through solids

- right angles to direction of travel so cause more damage

Surface waves (L waves)

Travel slowest and near to the ground surface, rolls along the surfavce like ripples in a pond  - Two main types

Love waves - also known as Q waves, travel in a sideways in horizontal movement, can only travel through solids

They are most destuctive as they decay slowly so have higher energy which are responsible for most of the shaking someone feels

Raleigh waves -  Rolls motion up and down, side to side, move through solids
