Successful Domestic Policies

  • Housing Act 1930
    • Restored subsidies for local authorities to build houses.
    • Began subsidies for slum clearing
    • Led to building of 700,000 houses
  • Development of Unemployment Insurance Act
    • Simplified the complexity of 1927 act
    • Increased number eligible for “transitional benefits
  • Road Traffic Act 1930
    • Introduction of driving offenses like dangerous driving and drink driving.
    • Drivers had to have 3rd party insurance
    • First driving tests
    • Highway code introduced
    • More regulation for buses and coaches
  • London Transport Bill 1913
    • Brought trams, underground and buses under one public authority

Unsuccessful Domestic Policies

  • Unemployment Insurance Act
    • In deficit by 1931 
    • Due to rising unemployment 
    • And reduced insurance incomes
  • 1931 Education Act
    • Rejected by the Lords in February 1931
  • Proposal to reform voting
    • Introduction of single transferable vote rejected by Lords and Liberals
  • Trade Disputes Bill
    • Defeated in the Lords
  • Land utilisation bill
    • Special commissions to buy up farm land not being productively used
    • Defeated in the Lords it inferred private land
  • Agricultural Marketing Act 1931
    • Setting up of agricultural boards didn’t really happen
  • Development Loan and Colonial Loan 1929
    • £42 million to build council housing and clean out slums
    • No large scale schemes
