Introduction

Welcome to my speech, talking about "Does religion affect terrorism?"

  • Picture a terrorist - Raise your hand if it is: 1) Male? 2)Muslim
  • Studies show that over 70% of people who were asked the same question recognised a typical terrorist as a male muslim.
  • Many instances of terrorism in the EU over the past five years were actually religiously influenced.
  •  For example, the borough market stabbing that happened more recently, on Sat 3rd June, terrorists were shouting "This is for Allah" -
  • Does the qu`ran state anything about killing innocent people?

Statistics to show religion is the influence

  • Studies show 188 cases of Muslim Americans who have been connected to terrorism activities. (info from huffington posts website)
  • The report recorded 18,000 deaths in 2013, a rise of 60% on the previous year. 66% of these were carried out by just 3 groups: Isis in Iraq and Syria, Taliban in Afghanistan, and Boko Haram in Nigeria. All of these countries are Islamic countries.

Statistics to show religion is not an influence

  • According to Metro.com , out of the 152 terrorist acts in the EU in 2013, only two were religiously motivated.

  • In 2011, none of the 174 attacks were ‘inspired’ by religious organisations.

My opinion

Obviously, many people have a wide range of opinions on this topic, and are entitled to these opinions, but personally, I feel the religion is not to blame. It is the person`s choices, decisions and surroundings that REALLY causes terrorism and rebellious behanviour.

  • So, if you want to find a terrorist, look for people buying dodgy chemicals, not people saying their prayers.
