DE as coherent

DE= living without physical form/ body

when discussing LAD issues arise. eg whether its going to be carried out with a disembodied existence (no body, just spiritual), or if its going to be an embodied existence (bodily).

SWINBURNE: agrees with the concept of DE as it is coherent and possible. HOW? he suggests that if we can imagine a situation where we are able to exist without a body, then it is a logical and coherent concept.

Others who agree with DE do so on the terms that we have an intuitive sense of not being the same as our bodies. for example, we say that we 'have' bodies, not that we 'are' bodies. = implying that we feel ourselves to be separate and distinct from the purely physical.

DE as coherent

H.H Price and LAD: he just defends the concept, dunno if he believes it. He is concerned about the intelligibility of ideas on lad and said that before we could even discuss it, we have to establish that these ideas are coherent. if not then moooooove.

HIS OPINION: LAD is an imaginable concept and could involve disembodied or embodied existence. He compares the afterlife to a dream in that they are similar. It feels real to us just like a dream and we are not bound by time just like a dream. He also suggests that images of the afterlife are so strong we can't even tell reality from a dream; we might be dead and not even know it- the mental images are like real perceptions.

Criticisms

  • this view is incompatible with the Biblical belief of resurrections.
  • what about those whose mental processes are insufficient for them to have memories and desires eg a newborn that's only been alive for few hours or those that are colour blind
  •  or those with mental illnesses- the mental image they will create will be unpleasant
