PCs

- personal computers

- first PCs came onto the market in the 1970s

- before, computers would take up rooms and need a lot of equipment

- number of transistors available on the surface of a CPU doubles roughly every 2 years

- devices have become smaller and smaller and therefore are more accessible to a wide range of users

- modern devices have a range of integrated devices

e.g microphones, webcams, hardware for storing data + accessing the internet

Mainframe Computers

- devices that handle large quantities of data that a powerful standalone computer would struggle with

- used by large organisations such as Amazon to process data from millions of customers

- not the same as a server, a server is a computer that manages network services whereas mainframe computers manage data

- use GPS

- newer versions can reroute to avoid congestion and can provide information about things like roadworks

- devices can be standalone or integrted into the vehicle

- mobile phones also offer this with the use of map apps
