Different groups of Poverty

Ethnic Minorities

  • Over 50%of Bangladesh families are amongst the poorest 1/5 of the population.
  • Half of all children from ethnic minorities live in low income families compared to 1/4 of white children. 

Some reasons why they are more likely to be in poverty:

  • Low pay
  • Culture
  • Unemployment
  • Family
  • Preside and racism in the workplace
  • Underachievement in education

People with disabilities

  • Palmer (2006) found that the poverty rate for disabled adults is around double that of non-disabled adults. 
  • 33% of disabled adults at working age are in poverty.

Some reasons why they are more likely to be in poverty are:

  • Inability to undertake paid employment maybe due to a physical or even mental injury.
  • Low pay
  • Employer discrimination where some may not employ a disabled adult for a number of different reasons.
  • Inadequate welfare benefits where they may not be given enough to cover them financially.

Children

  • Child poverty in the UK is higher than most other countries in the EU.
  • In 2012, 27% of all children were in poverty.
  • Hirsch believed that poverty in children causes other problems in their lives and adulthood.

Some reasons why they are more likely to be in poverty are:

  • Loan parenthood = higher children in poverty / parents may have low income.
  • lack of work and low pay
  • If they have a disability it could cause problems in finding work and some parents may also have to look after disabled children.

Women

  • Sacrifices = Middleton et al (1997) found mothers are more likely to sacrifice things for their children. 
  • 50% of Pakistani, Bangladesh women were found to be in poverty with their kids also more likely to stay poor in adult life.

Some reasons why they are more likely to be in poverty are:

  • More likely to be in low paid or part-time work 
  • Miss out on welfare benefits        
  • Women statistically live longer
  • Home workers
  • Low parenthood
  • Spend more time enjoying their retirement but their pensions are not enough.
