Deka- Meaning 10- 2 Versions in Exodus and Deuteronomy. McCay- Not all christians structure the decalogue the same way-both absolute and apodictic. The Covenant- 'Vogel'- Decalogue is rooted in the covenant

  • Begins with a preamble where God identifies himself- outlines the stipulations of the covenant.

Honour your mother and father

  • McCay- highlights the importance of resepct for family and reaffirms what natural law requires.

Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it Holy

  • Day of rest and religious instruction and worship.

No other God before me

  • Outlines authority of God- God is infinity and superiror and to not worship false Gods as there is only one true God.

Decalogue

You shall not murder

  • Murder destroys human life in ways beyond our repair and in the bible murder is therefore punishable by death.

You shall not steal

  • Theft is a violation of a person or family.
  • Moral duty to help those who are suffering and poor.

Human Experience- Singer- 'Commandments are outdated are are ambigious rules' He also believes that there can never be moral absolutes and also states that human life is no longer valid and all human life is equal- Euthanasia and suicide are acceptable.

Relevance today- White 'Commandments are not absolute' and are guidlines as to how we act and treat people. Embraced by millions throughout the world.

Not relevant today- Absolutist- When it comes to personal ethics the decalogue is out of question. nly for Isreal in Old Testament times and no longer relevant for today.
