Data collection/capture methods

Examples of data capture forms:

  • application forms
  • filled in questionnaires
  • order forms
  • booking forms

DATA CAPTURE: term for the various methods by which data can be entered into the computer so that it can be processed (most common way - keyboard)

Chip and pin: small chip containing encrypted data only reader in store can read. Has reduced card fraud.

OMR (optical mark reader): forms read automatically - removes problems of making mistakes when marks are typed in using the keyboard

ADV -OMR readers cheap, forms can be read at high speed, saves time

DIS - training needed to fill forms in correctly, forms can be crumpled/folded - rejected, special forms need to be created so takes time

Bar code reading: fast, accurate

Magnetic ***** reader: on credit/debit cards used to read info about card when paying for goods

Voice recognition: allows to enter data directly into computer via microphone

ADV - faster than typing, 99% accurate, cheap

DIS - takes while to get used to, not accurate a first, errors due to background noise

Biometrics: provides a fast and easy way of recognising a person by using a feature of the human body that is unique to a particular person in order to identify them

Methods include: voice/speech, fingerprint recognition, retinal scanning

ADV - not easily abused, nothing to forget

DIS - expensive technology, often vandalised

RFID (Radio Frequency Identification): obtains data stored on a tag using radio signals, wireless system

ADV - no need for reader and tag to come into contact

DIS - expensive
