Cystic Fibrosis

  • You cannot catch or develope CF you're either born with it, born a carrier or born without it
  • It is caused by a recessive allele
  • It is a Genetic disorder of the cell membranes
  • Results in the body producing a lot of sticky mucus in the air passages and in the pancreas
  • The CF allele is carried by about 1 in 25 people
  • people with only 1 copy of the allele are called carriers because they don't have the disorder
  • for a child to have the disorder both parents must either be sufferers or carriers
  • if both parents are carriers ther is a 1 in 4 chance of their child having CF
  • a combination of physiotherapy and medication can help stop mucus building up in the lungs
  • Thick mucus can block the ducts in the pancreas reducing the amounts of insulin produced
  • CF can lead to malnutrition, delayed puberty and sometimes diabetes
  • There is currently no cure for CF but there is lots of research into it
