Background Information

Vanuatu is a country with a chain of small islands, between Fiji and Australia, in the South Pacific Ocean.

It is considered on of the least developed countries - 2/3 work in agriculture.

70% of people in Vanuatu live in remote and rural areas.

Updates were colour-coded warnings sent by Radio and SMS.

Residents could trace the cyclone track on maps in telephone books.

Events/Impacts

Category 5 cyclone.

11 people died.

Damage to infrastructure - 80% of the buildings in Tanna were destroyed.

Crops demolished - destroyed livelihoods.

4 days after Pam hit, the islands power and communication was still cut off.

Tens of thousands of people were left homeless.

Responses

A lack of landing strips and deep water bays mean that it was harder to access supplies.

UNICEF provided vaccinations, bed nets and Vitamin A in Port Villa.

UK promised £2 mil in aid.

Australia gave Vanuatu $5 mil in aid.

UN deployed emergency rapid response units.
