Stock Storage Methods

  • costly to hold stock
  • storage costs: includes rent as well as associated costs
  • opportunity costs: cost of investing money in stock instead of something else. Capital tied up in stock is unproductive and could be used more efficiently elsewhere
  • can use insurance in the case of loss, damage, injury, or death

Cold Storage

  • refrigerators, coolers, and freezers to maintain safety and preserve quality
  • use-by dates must be adhered to

Dry Storage

  • anything stored at room temperature
    • 10°C to 21°C
  • ventilation
  • light
  • cleanliness
  • humidity levels (50-60%)
    • prevent mould and rust if humidity is kept low
  • by keeping at least two feet between inventory and ceiling to allow for ventilation

Racking

  • support and convenience that is lacking with block stacking
  • first in first out
  • used in small storage rooms or container to increase storage space

Block Stacking

  • items stored on a pallet or the floor
  • costs minimal as you do not need additional equipment or materials
  • possible weather damage
    • can use tarpaulin to protect storage
