ACID         NEUTRAL            BASE

.

In water a H+ may be transferred from one H O molecule to another, creating a hydronium ion H O+ , and a hydroxide ion OH-

.

.

Equal amounts are created so water is generally neutral overall.

pH

The equation for pH is:

.

.

and

.

.

Generally one mole of water contains                moles of H O+ ions.

Therefore the pH of water is 7

3 of 6

Using the Exponentials

If [H O+] = 1x10   moles dm then the pH is 7.

.

If [H O+] = 1x10   moles dm then the pH is -7.

.

The smaller the pH the more acidic, the larger the pH the more basic.

.

If we don't know the[H O+] we can usually use the ionic product of water (K )

K  = [H O+] [OH-]

    =  [1x10 ] [1x10 ]

    = 1x10
