Costs

  • Loss of jobs - 4000 jobs lost when Consett steel plant closed
  • Less income = decline in other economic activities
  • Less government income from tax and more unemployment benfits to pay
  • Leaves behind dangerous derelict sites - water filled quarries in Reading
  • Problems with waste - Coal mining in South Wales left behind heaps which were very dangerous (Aberfan Disaster)

Benefits

  • Cleaner environment as buildings and heaps are removed - Aberfan, South Wales
  • Opportunity for development - Eden Project in Cornwall is a tourist attraction
  • Land can be bought cheap and used for recreation purposes
  • Sites can be cleaned up so well that they can be used for agriculture again
