What is consumer protection?

They are laws that give consumers protection against unfaire selling practices. 

The consumer has basic rights if :

  • They are given a misleading description 
  • If a product is of a poor and unsatisfactory quality
  • If the product is not fit for its intended purpose

Sale and supply of goods act 1994

All products must be of a satisfactory quality.  

This means it must be:

  • Safe  
  • Last for a reasonable aount of time 
  • Be fit for the purpose 
  • Have nothing wrong with them

Trades Description Act

False or misleading information must not be given about products.  

For example, they must have an accurate description and state who made the product.  False designer goods that claim to be real break this law.

Consumer Credit Act 1974

It protects consumers when they pay or buy with credit.

  • Businesses must have a license to give credit
  • No one under the age of 18 is invited to buy ir pay with credit
  • Businesses have to state an anual percentage rate 
  • If you sign a credit agreement at home then there are a few days in which you can tear the agreement up.  This is the "cooling off period."
