Conservation

Conservation - conserving the planets resources for future generations.
Biodiversity - the range of species and habitats.

Threats to biodiversity;
*Deforestation: the removal of trees for wood or housing and agriculture. This causes higher levels of carbon dioxide and leads to soil erosion and possibly flooding.
Conservation methods taken to reduce this;

  • afforestation: the planting of new trees in areas where they did not exist before hand.
  • re-afforestation: replacing trees and forests in woodland areas.

*monoculture: the planting of one particular crop over large areas,eg, a maize. This decreases biodiversity and reduces soil fertility.
Conservation methods taken to reduce this;

  • crop rotation
  • natural areas
