TEHRAN CONFERENCE- 1943

28 NOVEMBER - 1 DECEMBER 1943              Churchill, Roosevelt and Stalin

TEHRAN AGREEMENTS:

  • USA and Britain would open a 2nd front to split Germany and take some pressure off Russia.
  • Russia should have a sphere of influence in Europe. USA and Britain also would have one in the the West.
  • When Germany is defeated, Russia will declare war on Japan.
  • Poland will be given some of Germany's land, however Russia will take some from Poland.

CHURCHILL wanted to invade the BALKINS (to help the war effort and stop the spread of communism) but ROOSEVELT sided with STALIN.

STALIN had been angry as he believed USA and Britain to have delayed opening a 2nd front.

YALTA CONFERENCE 1945

4  - 11 FEBRUARY 1945           YALTA        CHURCHILL, ROOSEVELT & STALIN

  • When GERMANY is defeated it'll become smaller and will be forced to pay reparations.  -  plans started on how to divide Germany and rebuild Europe.
  • Nazi party will be banned and war criminals tried in INTERNATIONAL COURT.
  • UN  will replace League of Nations -meet 25 APRIL 1945
  • UKRAINE and BELORUSSIA will seperate from RUSSIA.
  • RUSSIA will declare war on JAPAN 3 months after GERMAN defeat.
  • Communist government in POLAND.
  • Work for democracy in Europe.

USA and Britain reluctant to allow a communist Poland (for Polish protection and dislike of communism).

The BIG THREE disagreed on the definition of DEMOCRACY.

POTSDAM CONFERENCE 1945

17 JULY - 2 AUGUST       POTSDAM      STALIN, TRUMAN AND CHURCHILL 

  • Agreed to ban NAZI PARTY and prosecute surving members as war criminals.
  • Agreed to reduce Germany by  1/4.
  • Divide Germany into FOUR ZONES between FRANCE, BRITAIN, USA AND RUSSIA.
  • Tension started to grow and TRUMAN was much less willing to comprimise than ROOSEVELT had been. STALIN and TRUMAN had a sour aquaintance.
  • RUSSIA wanted heavy reparations from GERMANY, BRITAIN and USA wanted to rebuild GERMANY. Agreed each would take reparations from the zone they occupied.
  • TRUMAN has postponed conference to test atomic bomb and had had success, as stong he could push others around. STALIN refused to be pushed around, he privatly intended to create a buffer zone of countries around RUSSIA  for protection.
  • STALIN broke his word and hadn't set up a POLISH goverment with both capitalist & communist.
