Science HEAT

?

conduction

Conduction is all about when heat is transferred through a solid. The heat is passd on by vibrations in the molecules. These ibrations get BIGGER when the solid has more energy (i.e. when it is being heated).

Metals are better conducters than non metals. This is because the heat is carried by free electrons that can carry the energy around the metal and give it to other electrons that can cary the energy arond the meal and give it to other electons and ions.

Convection

Convection is all about when a gas or liquid moves and carries heat with it. When the fluid is heated it expands.

This means it will become less dense than the colder fluid around it. Because of this warmer fluid will try to float over the colder fluid, and this is why warm air rises. This is called a convection current. This is how heat reaches us from the radiators in the room

Radiation

Radiation is when heat moves around in electromagnet waves like light does. Any hot object will emit hat radiation the hotter it is, the more radation it emits. This tye of radiation is called infra red and too much of it will cause sunburn.Dark matt colours will absorb AND emit the most infra red radiation, and light, shiny colours will reflect.Radiation will only happen in empty space.. Yhis is just as well as otherwise we wot be ble to get any heat from the sun.
