CompTIA A+ - Hard Disk Drive #1

Hard Disk Drive (HDD) - Permanent Storage / Quick Access

ComponentsHard Disk / Controller / Host Bus Adapter (HBA)

Hard Disk

  • Made of high conductive material
  • Info written by an electric charge creating a very small magnetic field (Magnetic Storage)
  • Each disk known as a 'platter' has two writable surfaces (Top & Bottom)
  • Multiple 'platters' increase drive capacity

Controller

  • Controls all moving parts
  • Controls the platters spin
  • Controls the Read / Write Arm
  • Handles how the data is encoded onto the platters interfaced to the computer by 'SATA'

Host Bus Adapter (HBA) - is a translator

  • Converts signals from the computer into electrical signals to be written on the platter
  • And vice versa converts electric charge to binary. (No charge=0 / Charge=1)

Primary storage for Desktops.Known as 'magnetic storage'.Its benefits...

Mature(been around a long time improving) / Reliable / Relatively Inexpensive

Different sizes to accomodate the disk inside 1.8in(not widely used) / 2.5in(laptops & portable devices) / 3.5in(mainstream for desktops)
