CARBON FIBRE

COMPOSITION:

  • similar to GRP production|

PROPERTIES:

  • excellent strenght to weight ratio
  • tough, glossy finish on surfaces in contact with the mould
  • large complex shapes possible
  • safety equiptments must be used

USES:

  • aerospace components
  • sporting equiptments (eg fishing rods, rackets & skies)
  • body armour

GLASS REINFORCED PLASTIC - GRP (fibre glass)

COMPOSITION:

  • sealant & releasing agent are applied to a smooth tapered mould
  • hardner & pigment are added to polyester resin
  • 1mm thick resin 'gelcoat' is applied to the mould & allowed to dry for around 30mins
  • glass fibre matting is laid over mould & pressed into the resin using rollers or by stippling with a brush
  • alternate layers of resin & glass fibre are built up to an appropiate thichness
  • excess material is removed
  • resin is allowed to cure before the mould is separated & edges are finished when fully hardened

PROPERTIES:

  • very good strenght to weight ratio
  • tough
  • glossy
  • water resistance on surfaces in contact with the mould
  • large complex shapes possible
  • safety euiptment has to be used to protect from fumes & fine fibres

USES:

  • sailing boats hulls
  • canoes
  • signage
  • garden pond liners
