Completing the square

Step 1: move to the right side of the equation.

Step 2: Make a = 1 by dividing all the numbers by a.

Step 3: Divide b by 2, then square that result. Add the final result to both sides of the equation.

Step 4: Factorise the left-hand side of the equation.

Step 5: Square root both sides.

Step 6: Solve for x.

1 of 2

Worked example

x2 – 8x + 5 = 0

x2 – 8x = - 5

x2 – 8x + 16 = - 5 + 16

(x - 4)2 = 11

x - 4 = √11

Answer :
