Competition

?

Competition

  • Plants compete for resources
  • Animals compete for food, shelter, space and reproductive partners
  • Effect of competition is to reduce growth rate to a lower level
  • Reduces population growth

Intraspecific Competition

  • Occurs between members of the same species.
  • density dependent
  • organisms usually produce more offspring than the habitat can support, so organisms better adapted have a better chance of survival.

Interspecific Competition

  • Occurs between members of a different species.
  • Each species occupoes a particular niche in an ecosystem.
  • If competators occupy the same niche or overlapping niches, equilibrium may be reached where neither succeeds as well as it could in the absense of the competitor.
  • If one declines in number to the point of extinction, this is known as competitive exclusion
