Advantages and disadvantages of using communicatio

Network: a group of computers that are able to communicate with each other

  • two or more computers that are linked together so that they are able to share resources (printer, scanner, software)

Peer - to - peer networks: home networks/small businesses where a simple cheap network is needed

  • each computer on network has equal status
  • all computers can share each other's resources
  • only suitable for small networks with fewer than 10 users
  • only basic knowledge is needed to set one up and use it
  • as more people use the network it slows down

Client server networks: large organisation would use this - more powerful and can do a lot

  • powerful computer (server) is used to store data and programs needed by whole network. Server is in control of network
  • software and data is stored on server so it can be accessed by all computers in the network
  • network is dependent on server
  • network that need lots of computers

LAN (Local Area Network): network of computers on one site

  • confined to small area
  • located in a single building
  • uses cables, wireless, infrared and microwave links that are owned by the organisation
  • cheap to build/run

WAN (Wide Area Network): a network where the terminals/computers are remote from each other and telecommunications are used to communicate between them

  • covers wide geographical area (between cities, countries)
  • in lots of different buildings, cities, countries
  • uses more expensive telecommunications links that are supplied by telecommunications companies
  • expensive to build/run

Advantages of Internet:

  • information can be accessed everywhere
  • improved communications systems - emails, texts
  • changes way we shop
  • VoIP enables cheap international phone calls to be made using internet
  • can help people with disabilities be more independent - order goods/services online

Disadvantages of Internet:

  • cyber crime - bank/credit card details
  • addiction to gambling/games/chat rooms
  • shops close down - Internet shopping
  • misinformation - wrong information on sites

Authentication Techniques: used to check that a person accessing network/communication system is a person

Usernames: identifying user to system

SERIES OF CHARACTERS THAT IS USED TO IDENTIFY A CERTAIN USER TO THE NETWORK.

  • used by network to give user access to certain files
  • network manager can keep track of what files each user is accessing for security reasons

Passwords: preventing unauthorised access to the system

SERIES OF CHARACTERS CHOSEN BY USER THAT ARE USED TO CHECK THE IDENTITY OF THE USER WHEN THEY REQUIRE ACCESS TO AN ICT SYSTEM.

Only on entry of the correct password will the user be allowed access to the network.

Digital signatures: A way of ensuring that an email or document sent electronically is authentic

Encryption: PROCESS OF CODING FILES BEFORE THEY ARE SENT OVER A NETWORK TO PROTECT FROM HACKERS

If computer is stolen, files cannot be read. Used for:

  • sending credit card details over Internet
  • online banking
  • sending payment details
  • sending data between computers on a network - confidential - e.g, emails
