colonal selection theory

Lymphocytes respond to specific antigens on invading pathogens.

Antigens are molecules, often proteinslocated on the surface of a cell whichtriggers a specific immune response 

Each lymphocyte can therefore only bind with one type of antigen

Antien binding leads to repeated cell division of lymphoctes to form a clonal population of identicle lymphocytes - this process is called clonal selection
