1967 - Outer Space Treaty

- Stopped the arms race going to outer space

- No nuclear weapons allowed in space from either country

1968 - Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty

- Neither superpower (USA or USSR) would supply nukes to other states or assist other states in devleoping them

- Superpower conflict was prevented from spreading to other parts of the world

1972 - SALT 1

SALT = Strategic Arms Limitations Treaty

- Both USA and USSR agreed they would not produce any more strategic ballistic missiles

- Nuclear submarines would only be introduced when exisisting stocks of inter-continental ballistic missiles became obsolete.

The first agreement that cut the number of nuclear missles held. Proved both sides had common ground.

1975 - Helsinki Conference

-Stabilised situation in Europe

- Agreed greater co-operation between the superpowers and European allies in trade and fighting terrorism

1975 - Apollo/Soyuz Mission

- Joint USA/USSR mission in which spacecraft docked above Earth

- Marked the beginning of superpower co-operation in space

1972 - SALT 2

Negotiations began in 1972 onwards

They were disrupted by the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979.

SALT 2 is important because it would have had a significant impact if it had actually been signed by President Carter.

SALT 2 would have cut stocks of nuclear warheads to 2250 for each superpower. President Carter's withdrawal from the talks in disgust at the USSR's invasion of Aghanistan meant it never became law in the USA.
