COGNITIVE Approach - Craik & Lockhart, LOP

LEVELS OF PROCESSING

  • Memory trace - comes with depth of processing/degree of elaboration
(NO DEPTH PROCESSING= NO MEMORY TRACE)
  • Deeper analysis - more persistent memory trace
  • Rehearsal in primary memory - holds info but doesn't leave memory trace
  • When attention diverted - info lost at rate that depends on level of analysis

Supporting evidence: Hyde & Jenkins - remember more when told to jugde meaning of word
Craik & Tulving - best recall when asked to judge if word fit into a sentence or not -> MEANING
Whole process instead of only storage.
Time=better memory, not depth of processing
'Depth' hard to define, term unclear = framework unclear
