Religion in Germany

Hitler knew that he couldnt get rid of Christianity, but he could control the churches as he saw them as a thrat to his rule.

  • July 1933 Hitler signed a Concordat with the Catholic Church - Hitler would let them run their schools etc. if they didnt get involved with politics.
  • In the late 1930s, Pope Pius XI spoke against the Nazi regime.
  • Lutherans who supported Nazis - led by Bishop Ludwig Muller.
  • Some Lutherans opposed the Nazis - set up the Confessional Church.
  • Nazis set up their own church - German Faith Movement.
  • GFM veered from Christianity and was based on pagan beliefs.
