Human Rights

Human rights are the basic rights and freedoms that humans are entittled to.

The importance of human rights-

-the teachings of the bible support human rights

-all humans are created by god and so are sacred

- god loves everyone equally

'do to others what you would have the  do to you'

' whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me'

Equality

Causes of inequality

Experiences- sometimes people treat others differently due to prior experiences

Ignorance, Global influences, poverty, selfishness

Christian teachings on equality-

All humans were made in the image of god

God loves everyone equally and does not show favouritism

The parable of the good samaritan teaches christians to care for people equally

Jesus treated everyone the same

'there is neither jew nor gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in christ jesus'

Charities such as oxfam and christian aid work to tackle the casues of inequality.

Also individuals such as Martin Luther king Jr and Desmond Tutu work to challenge the inequalities in society.

Religious freedom

Religious freedom is when a person is free to choose what religion they belong to and change their religion.

Christian responses to religious freedom-

- jesus taight to treat others as you want to be treated showing that people shouldn't be treated differently.

-some christians would be concerned that religious freedom would threaten their own religion.

- some people beleieve that their religion is the correct religion

'the right to the exercise of freedom' - the catholic catechism

Benefits of a Multi-faith society- Greater tolerance to others,varied culture, better understanding of different viewpoints.

Challenges of a Multi-faith society- difficulty in un derstanding, religious persecution, religious tension,

Predudice and discrimination

Christian teachings on prejudice and discrimination- 

- all people were made in the image of god and are therfore beautiful and equal

-christians follow the example of jesus who did not discriminate

-the golden rule

-the parable of the good samaritan demonstrates the idea of helping others and not treating them differently.

Racial Harmony

-campaigns for racial harmony

-works to campaign for gay rights, poverty, church reform

Racial discrimination

Why racial discrimination is a problem in society

- tension caused between different groups of people

-some minority raical groups can feel isolated

- being on the receiving end of racial discrimination can impact an individuals feelings of self worth.

Social Justice

The church and social justice-

- churches provide food banks and charity pot's in order to close the wealth gap

- through churches christians educate others on social injustice

The bible teaches that you have a duty to help those less fortunate than you, 'whoever is generous to the poor lends to the lord'

Wealth and poverty

The nature of poverty-

Absolute poverty- a severe lack of basic necessties such as food, safe drinking water, sanitation, healthcare, shelter and education

Relative poverty-

living below the standards of living within your country, lacking luxuries and some necessities.

Causes of poverty in the world-

-low or un-paid labour, unemployment, ilness, rapid population growth, war and political instability, national debt, lack of education, war, enviromental problems.

' anyone who has 2 shirts should share with the one who has none'

'go, sell everything you have and give to the poor'

' for I was hungry and you gave me something to eat'
