Christian Attitudes to Genetic Engineering

Some Christian Agree with Genetic Engineering because:

  • The Golden Rule of Jesus is to '...do to others what you would have them do to you' (Matthew 7:12). For some christians this would mean genetic engineering is acceptable when it is used to cure a painful disease or disorder.
  • Jesus healed many people, suggesting Christians should do what they can to heal and improve the health or human beings, including altering their genes.
  • The bible states that God gave humans "dominion over the fish of sea, the birds of the air, and every living thing that moves on the earth". Some Christians would argue this includes genes. It would also include GM crops, so long as it did not cause harm.

Christian Attitudes to Genetic Engineering

Some Christians Disagree with Genetic Engineering because:

  • They believe only God can create life and humans should not 'play at being God'. This would mean all forms of Genetic Engineering and crops are wrong.
  • Some Christians, including Roman Catholics, believe human life begins at conception therefore these christians are against embryo research (for genetic engineering) as this invovles discarding embryos, which is viewed as murder.
  • Most Christians would be opposed to genetic engineering that corrects 'defects' which do not cause suffering as it takes away Gods role to create indivituality and could have a dangerous effect on society
  • The bible states "But god gives it a body as he has chosen, and each kind of seed its own body. For all flesh is not the same". Corinthians 15:38-39 suggesting it is wrong to interfer with what god has give, so genetic engineering would not be acceptable.
