Over 69,000 people lost their lives in the quake, including 68,636 in Sichuan province
374,176 were reported injured
18,222 listed as missing
Left about 4.8 million people homeless
In the city of Dujiangyan, south-east of the epicenter, a whole school collapsed with 900 students buried and fewer than 60 survived.
7000 inadequally engineered schools collapsed, killing 19065 children. Many families this was their only child (one child policy). So for families with multiple kids, the illegal ones took the places of the first child if they were killed, so the parents were no longer fined.
Around 25% of the deaths were due to landslides and other effects apart from shaking.

Flooding due to landslides.
The Sichuan earthquake caused huge landslides across the affected region. Some of these landslides fell into riverbeds and dammed the water - forming what are called "quake lakes." Quake lakes are extremely dangerous for two reasons: first, because the lake they create behind the landslide will severely flood nearby cities and farmland, and secondly because the landslide dam will usually fail after damming up a large amount of water, sending a huge wave of water downstream that will destroy anything in its path.
Agriculture was the main economic employment for the region. Prices of pork and grain began to rise as there simply wasn't enough to go around after the disruption to grazing land and fields.
