Chemistry Topics 2

Includes everything I need like:

-Rocks

-Limestone

-Thermal Decomposition

-Atoms and Mass in Chemical Reactions

etc

?

3 Different Types of Rocks

-Sedimentary- Rocks made from fossils of dead plants & animals in the sea.

-Metamorphic- Rocks that are formed from other rocks by heat & pressure

-Igneous- Rocks that are made from fresh magma. (When molten pushes up in the crust before cooling & solidifying.

EXTRUSIVE= igneous rocks cool QUICKLY ABOVE GROUND forming SMALL crystals.

INTRUSIVE= igneous rocks cool SLOWLY UNDER GROUND forming BIG crystals.

Using Limestones

Limestone is used as a building material...

But when it is made, it needs to be quarried and that isn't good for the environment becuase:

- It destroys habitats

- It makes a lot of noise & dust because they blast rocks apart with explosives

- Needs to be transported away, using lorries (causes more noise & pollution)

Even though it does all this damage, people still want their houses, roads, buildings, etc to be made of limestone

Balancing Equations

When you balance an equation, all you do is match it up one by one.....

TIP: Balance one atom (on both sides) one at a time.

E.g. H2SO4 + NaOH -> Na2SO4 + H2O

H2SO4 + NaOH -> Na2SO4 + 2H2O

This causes too many H and O atoms on the right hand side, so to balance them, you put 2NaOH on the left hand side.

H2SO4 + 2NaOH -> Na2SO4 + 2H2O Now everything balances!

(s)- solid (l)- liquid (g)- gas (aq) dissolved in water     aq- aqueous
