Parson

Winston's Neighbour

Married has two Kids. 

Loyal to the party, Loves the party. 

Ends up joining Winston in the ministry of love. Does not really know what he has done. 

Actually called Tom. 

"Parsons was Winston’s fellow-employee at the Ministry of Truth. He was a fattish but active man of paralysing stupidity, a mass of imbecile enthusiasms—"

"At thirty-five he had just been unwillingly evicted from the Youth League,"-

He mutters "Down with Big Brother” in his sleep which provides the reader with hope that Big Brother will fall.

Mrs Parsons

A colourless, crushed-looking woman, with wispy hair and a lined face, was standing outside. She was a woman of about thirty, but looking much older. She had a habit of breaking off her sentences in the middle. 

Winstons neighbour, Married to 'Tom'/ Mr Parsons. has two children. One aged Nine one just descirbed as Little. 

Intimiadeted by her children - Another year, two years, and they would be watching her night and day for symptoms of unorthodoxy 

shows desruction of the parent child relationship.

Syme

 Syme was a philologist, a specialist in Newspeak. - Winstons Co-worker at the Ministry of truth. 

 In an intellectual way, Syme was venomously orthodox. 

‘It was a good hanging,’ said Syme reminiscently. ‘I think it spoils it when they tie their feet together. I like to see them kicking. And above all, at the end, the tongue sticking right out, and blue—a quite bright blue. That’s the detail that appeals to me.’

Violence seen as entertainment Syme has an opionion here this may have been one of the things that led him to be vaporised as he questions the parites descion, this shows the party is omnipotent.

Katherine

Winstons Wife- portrayed as a bear with little brain. Only show to the reader through winsotns memory.

Tall fair- haired.(reference to somone being blond?)

They 'seperated' due to them being unable to complete there duty to the party.

Would insist on practising procreation to the party every week "our duty to the party" (control over intercourse)

active member of the anti-sex league.

"To embrace her was like embracing a jointed wooden image" 

- control society identity

Main purpose of the character

To show how the party destroys love sex and relationships.

Charrington

Owner of the Antiques shop were Winston gets the paperweight and the diary.  He also rents the room to winston and Julia and then turns out to be a member of the thought police.

When he becomes the thought police subtle changes have been made to him.

He helps to highlight the themes of betrayal, deception and violence within 1984

Mr and Mrs Parsons Kids

Violent member of the spies. 

The younger one turner her father in for thoughtcrime 

'It was my little daughter,' said Parsons with a sort of doleful pride. 'She listened at the keyhole. Heard what I was saying, and nipped off to the patrols the very next day. Pretty smart for a nipper of seven, eh? I don't bear her any grudge for it. In fact I'm proud of her. It shows I brought her up in the right spirit, anyway.'

Winston

The protaganist, works in the ministry of truth. 

A smallish, frail figure, the meagreness of his body merely emphasized by the blue overalls which were the uniform of the party. His hair was very fair, his face naturally sanguine, his skin roughened by coarse soap and blunt razor blades and the cold of the winter that had just ended. Thirty-nine and had a varicose ulcer above his right ankle. He does not conform to the party Ideals.

Julia

Member of the Anti-sex league. Falls in Love with winston becomes his mistress.

Rebels through intercourse and wishes to live in the moment, avoid getting caught by the party.

Also  tortured, brainwashed by party 

the size and springiness of the bed astonished both of them. ‘It’s sure

to be full of bugs, but who cares? - violence against people  depriving them of good living conditions, control - have they ever seen a nice bed before?

O'Brien

"A mysterious, powerful, and sophisticated member of the Inner Party whom Winston believes is also a member of the Brotherhood, the legendary group of anti-Party rebels."

"They got me long ago"

Used to represent the possiblities of totalitarianism. 

He tricks winston into believing he is in leigue with big brother.

However later brainwashes him, Winston still loves O'Brien.

It first appears that O'brien is a rounded character however the more oyu read the less you know about him.

Ampleforth

Winston’s Records Department co-worker, imprisoned for leaving the word “God” in a Rudyard Kipling poem.

a mild, ineffectual, dreamy creature named Ampleforth, with very hairy ears and a surprising talent for juggling with rhymes and metres, was engaged in producing garbled versions

He reperesents the idea of the dreams and the ever dying freedom of expression. His job is to re write the poems in the ministry of truth to glorify the party and big brother. Thereforecreating the impression that Big borther was and is the only leading figure that people can look to.
