Mr Bennet

  • "Your mother will never see you again of you do marry Mr Collins and I will never see you again if you do"
  • Respected by Elizabeth - she's his favourite daughter
  • He was seduced by Mrs Bennet's appearance, but they aren't a good match, he has no respect for her
  • He makes a mistake ignoring Lizzie's concerns and allowing Lydia to go to Brighton and this could have cost him dearly if it weren't for Darcy, he would have lost Lydia and the Family's reputation would have been ruined
  • Shares the same wit and sense of humour as Lizzie
  • Agitates Mrs Bennet on purpose - says he wont go and see Bingley and does

Mary Bennet

  • "Mary wished to say something sensible, but knew not how." - She cannot come up with sharp, witty relpies like Lizzie and Mr B.

Kitty Bennet

  • Easily influenced by Lydia, depsite being older

Mr Bingley

Kind-Hearted, naive, easily influenced, gullible, loving

  • "Mr Bingley was good-looking and gentlemenlike; he had a pleasant countenance, and easy, unaffected manners."
  • Excited by the propect of all these beautiful women he sees at the first ball
  • Easily pleased, grateful, good manners
  • Devoted to Jane, though persuaded to abadon is feeling for her
  • Conforms to what society wants

Miss Bingley

Hypocritical, flirtatious, cruel

  • "His sisters were fine women, with an air of decided fashion." - C3
  • "You will be having a charming Mother-In-Law indeed" C6, when Caroline learns that Darcy is attracted to Elizabeth.
  • Wants Elizabeth to take a turn about the room with her - conscious their figures will be shown off to Darcy
  • Leads Jane on to believing she'll come and visit after Jane suprised her in London but never does.

  • married to Bingley's sister
  • "Mr Hurst merely looked the gentlemen."
  • drunk most of the time

Mrs Hurst

  • Bingley's other sister

Miss Darcy

  • Caroline Bingley on Miss Darcy " Such countenance, such manners! And so extremely accomplished for her age!" C8

Miss de Bourgh

  • LC's sickly daughter 
  • will inherit Rosings
  • Assumption by LC she will marry Darcy when old enough

Elizabeth Bennet

Sassy, lively, intelligent, easy, playful

  • Unafraid to challenge Darcy, " I rather wonder now at your knowing any." When he tells her what an accomplished woman is in his opinion. C8
  • "She hardly knew how to suppose that she could be an object of admiration to so great a man." - she catches Darcy looking at her alot but assumes it cant be because he likes her because she's so prejudice against him. C10
  • "She had been blind, partial, prejudiced, absurd." - her epiphany in C36 after reading Darcy's explanatory letter.
  • "You may ask questions that I may not choose to answer." - speaking to LC towards the end when she interrogates her about he intentions with Darcy.
  • "I am not to be intimidated into anything so wholly unreasonable." - when LC demands her to promise she will never get engaged to Darcy.

Mr Collins

Pompous, Self-Absorbed, materialistic, arrogant

  • "Mr Collins was not a sensible man." C15
  • "the moment of her release from his was ecstasy." - after Elizabeth had to dance with him at Netherfield Ball. C18
  • "neither sensible nor agreeable" - description of him after we learn he's engaged to Charlotte. C22
  • "Mr Collins is a conceited, pompous, narrow-minded silly man" C24 - Elizabeth
  • "The death of your daughter would have been a blessing in comparison of this." - Mr Collins response to hearing the news of Lydia's elopment with Wickham.
  • Precise - provides the exact dates and times of his arrival in the first letter, invites himself 
  • Eager to please Lady Catherine because of her high rank and social status, he worships her.
  • Rude - he doesn't wait for Darcy to request to be introduced, he simply strolls up and introduces himself because he knows Darcy's aunt LC - this isn't how society works, it's rude! He feels no shame as he feels he has the authority to do this because of his LC connection.
  • Changes from Jane > Elizabeth > Charlotte very quickly (less than 3 days from E>C proposals)

Wickham

  • Appears to be charming, speaks well
  • "Oh! no-it is not for me to be driven away by Mr Darcy." C16 Shows he isn't truthful when he breaks this statment later. 
  • "whose very countenance may vouch for your being amiable" - Elizabeth questioning how Darcy could cut Wickham out of the inheritance when he looked so angelic. countenance = face.
  • "Mr Wickham is blessed with such happy manners as may ensure him making friends - whether he may be equally capable of retaining them is less certain" - Darcy's opinion of him

Lydia Bennet - Outspoken, "high animal spirits", precocious, shallow, flirtatious

  • ""Lord, how tired I am!" accompanied by a violent yawn" - Lydia's reaction to when Mr Collins is complimenting the Bingleys on the sucess of the Netherfield Ball. She's rudeas women were expected to be polite at all times.
  • "Lydia, self-willed and careless" - Elizabeth's descripition of her after Darcy Letter offended her family and she realises it's true.
  • "She seldom listened to anyone for more than half a minute."
  • Self-centered, show when she imagines herself as the object of attention, "tenderly flirting with at least 6 officers at once" - her dream of Brighton with the Forsters.

Lady Catherine de Bourgh

  • "a tall, large woman with strongly marked features" - introductory description of LC. C29
  • "Lady Catherine seemed gratified by their excessive admiration" C29
  • "No governess how was that possible!" "Withought a governess you must have been neglected" C29
  • "the party then gathered around the fire to hear LC determine the weather they were to have on the morrow" C29
  • "If I had ever learnt I would have been a great proficient" C31
  • "I will not be interrupted" "Are the shades of Pemberly to be thus polluted?" C
  • Mrs Bennet - Embarrassing, rude, superficial,
  • "a woman whose weak understanding and illiberal mind"
  • Ill-suited to Mr Bennet
  • Model for what Elizabeth doesn't want in a marriage
  • Obsessed with marrying off her daughters
  • Doesn't allow Jane to take the carriage to visit the Bingleys because it's raining and she hopes she'll catch a cold and have to stay there for longer. Cruel. Silly.
  • Says she's ill (nerves) when she receives news of Lydia's elopement, but immediately gets better when she hears Lydia's to marry Wickham and celebrates the fact she'll be married at 16.
  • Hysterical - Thinks Mr Bennet will fight Wickham and be killed...

Irony/Satire

  • "the party then gathered around the fire to hear LC determine the weather they were to have on the morrow"
  • "True; and nobody can ever be introduced in a ballroom."  E talking to Darcy.
  • "His misfortunes!.. Yes his misfortunes have been great indeed!" - E confronting Darcy about his behaviuor towards Wickham.
  • "to be the Mistress of Pemberley might be something!" - when E first sees Pemberley.

Mr Darcy

Proud, difficult, shy, awkward, 

  • "He is perfectly well behaved, polite, and unassuming" - Mr Gardiners interpretation of Darcy after meeting him at Pemberley.
  • Naive - doesn't realise the offence he causes when saying all the obstacles he had to face i.e. Elizabeth's rank and family, but depite this he wants to marry her...
  • Socially awkward, comes across as rudenedd and being impolite
  • Distant and his manners appear to be cold, 
  • "every savage can dance" - judgemental, looks down on society, priviledged
  • Comes across as snobby, £10,000 a year

Charlotte Lucas - Older (27), realistic, small fortune, Elizabeth's best friend

  • "I am not romantic you know" 
  • Marriage is "the only honourable provision for well-educated young women of small fortune."
  • Has realistic views on what's achievable for her
