(Chapter 13) Plant Hormones- Uses of Plant Hormones

?

Selective Weedkillers

  • Auxins are used in many selective weedkillers
  • Kills broadleaved plants as they have a greater surface area and absorb more weedkiller
  • The hormones make plants grow uncontrollably, killing them
  • Selective weedkillers are sprayed on lawns as they only affect the weeds

Rooting Powder

  • Help propagation as cuttings can grow roots
  • Contains auxins which helps roots to grow
  • Artificial, asexual plant reproduction
  • The offspring plants have identical DNA to the mother plant

Tissue Culture

  • Auxins are used in tissue cultures
  • Artificial, asexual plant reproduction
  • Small numbers of cells are reduced from parent plant and placed in the medium
  • Similar rooting process to when using rooting powder

Fruit Ripening

  • Plants produce ethene to ripen fruits
  • Fruit is picked before ripe so it doen't rot
  • Just before reaches market is is sprayed with ethene so it fully ripens

Gibberellins

  • Gibberellins are used by plants for multiple reasons:
    • Stem elongation
    • Seed dormancy
    • Germination
  • They are often used in horticulture for germination and helping plants flower and grow
