Counter-urbanisation- the movement of people and employment from mjor cities to smaller settlements and rural areas located beyond the city, or to more distant towns and cities. 

Re-urbanisation- the movement of people back towards city centres away from rural areas and from suburbs.

Shanty towns- an area of very poor housing, often self built by residents out of basic materials.

Natural Increase- the difference between the birth rate and the death rate.

Migration- the process of people changing their place of residence, either within or between countries

Megacities- very large cities with populations over ten million people.

population density- the number of people per square kilometre

conurbations- an area in which a number of existing areas have grown and merged into a large single urban area.

tertairy industries- an industry which provides a aervice, such as banks, shops, schools, hospitals and restaurants.

quaternary industries- an industry which provides intellectual services such as information gathering and processing, universities and research and development.

situation- the location of a place relative to its surroundings and other places.

site-the actual location of a settlement on the Earth and the physical characteristics of the landscape specific to the area.

central business district-(CBD) the central area of a city, where land use is dominated by department stores, specialist and variety goods stores and offices, cinemas, theatres and hotels.

comprehensive development areas-(CDA) an area, usually in the inner city, where the whole urban landscape was demolished before being rebuilt on a planned basis.
