Cement, concrete and glass

?

Cement

CEMENT;

-Although lime motar holds brick and stone together, it doesn't work in all situations

-Lime mortar doesn't harden very quickly, it won't set where water prevents it from reacting with carbon dioxide

-People found heating limestone with clay in a kiln produced cement produced cement

-Portland cement which is used today is made this way but with other minerals added

-This type of cement is used to build modern houses mixed with sand and water

Concrete

CONCRETE;

-Sometimes builders add stones or crushed rock to the mixture of water, cement and sand. When this sets, it forms hard, stone-like building material called concrete

-This material is very strong

-Good at resisting forces which tend to squeeze or crush it

-Can make concrete even stronger by pouring it around steel rods or bars and then allowing it to set

-This makes reinforces concrete, which is also good at resisting forces

Glass

GLASS;

-powdered limestone is mixed with sand and sodium carbonate is heated strongly to make glass

-Glass is a building material that is both weatherproof and light

-Modern chemists have developed glass with many different properties to desgin different and new buildings
