Four underlying causes of the war
M- ilitarism: building up a strong army and navy to be prepared for war (Arm's Race)
A-lliances: 1882- Triple Alliance. (Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy) 1907- Triple Entente (France, Britain, Russia)
I-mperialism: The desire to conquer colonies, especially in Africa. This brought the powers into conflict - Germany wanted an empire. France and Britain already had empires.
N-ationalism: The belief that your country is better than others (patriotic). This made nations assertive and aggressive.
