What did they do?

The Tigris - Euphrates River has its source in : TURKEY

But it distributes and passes by : SYRIA & IRAQ

GAP project (South East Anatolia Project) produced..

  • 21 dams
  • 19 power plants

Turkey wanted MORE water

--> Agriculture & Domestic usage (eg. irrigation)
--> Produce 22% of Turkeys electricity (Hydroelectric Power)

How will this impact Syria and Iraq?

No water --> affects farming --> less food --> need imported food --> economical issue

The Middle East have a lack of water (Water deficit/scarcity)

  • Its very dry --> they need water!
  • They worry Turkey and Syria will consume most of the water before it reaches Iraq

There has been conflicts since 1940s

  • in 1974 Iraq put troops on the Syrian boarder --> Threatened to destroy the dam
