Bonding; Ionic, Covalent & Metallic

?

Ionic

Giant Ionic Regular Lattice Structures

Description:

  • between metals and non-metals
  • electrons are transferred foriming oppositely charged ions that are then attracted to each other

Phrases to use:

  • electrostatic forces of attraction between oppositely charged particles
  • form regular structures
  • have high melting and boiling points as have to break strong bonds

Covalent

Description:

  • between non-metals
  • sharing of electrons
  • orbits (shells) held together by covelent bonds
  • two types; simple or giant structures/molecules

Molecules to know:

  • diamond
  • silicon - SiO2
  • graphite

Simple:

  • weak intermolecular forces
  • forces of attraction are easily overcome
