Blood Brothers Quotes - Mrs Johnstone

?

Singing Marilyn Monroe 1

This scene is the first time that we see Mrs Johnstone, she is singing the first song called Marilyn Monroe 1. This song shows how she met her husband, rushed into marriage and had children without making any plans. Later on in the song, Mrs Johnstone tells us of how her husband ran away with another woman leaving her struggling with seven children. Also, she is in debt and can't pay her bills, she can't afford much food - something which shouldn't be a luxury to someone. Furthermore, we see in this scene that Mrs Johnstone has got a new job which will provide them with money to buy things that they need. She describes all the food that she would buy for the children, this shows their working class background as to them, food is a luxury.

A stone in place of her heart?

In the club again

Twice the size of Marilyn Monroe

He'd walked out on me

With seven hungry mouths to feed

Next week, I'll pay y'

Free dinners

We'll have loads of things to eat

Finds out she is having twins

Here, Mrs Johnstone goes to the gynaecologist and is told that she is having twins. This comes as a shock to Mrs Johnstone as she knows that she won't be able to manage with another baby. When she goes to work at Mrs Lyons' house, she reveals to her that she is having twins. She brings up how she is concerned and scared that her children will be taken away from her as she is struggling to manage but we also see how she is a very good mother as she talks about how much she loves her children and the children she is going to have. However, Mrs Lyons replies with the request for Mrs Johnstone to give one her babies to Mrs Lyons. This request and plan of Mrs Lyons reveals her manipulative, clever and persuasive side, but we see Mrs Johnstone feel sympathy for her as she can't have children of her own which results in her agreeing to giving her one of her children. Mrs Johnstone knows that the child will have a better life. Mrs Lyons also makes Mrs Johnstone swear on the Bible that she will not tell anyone, this shows how she has taken advantage of Mrs Johnstone showing her cunning and clever side.

Numbed by the news                                                     My child

I love the bones of every one of them                            Suddenly reaches for the Bible

The welfare have already been on to me                       Deal been born

Give one to me

He need never guess

Sacked - superstition

This scene shows us how Mrs Lyons tells Mrs Johnstone to have the week off on full pay, this is the start of her getting rid of Mrs Johnstone. She is being like this because she is jealous of Mrs Johnstone holding her baby because she wants the baby to be all hers and have no interference from Mrs Johnstone. Also, she doesn't want the child to grow up around Mrs Johnstone as she may tell him the truth one day which is foreshadowing what will happen. Mrs Lyons then sacks Mrs Johnstone which shocks her as Mrs Lyons promised that she would be able to see Edward every day. Mrs Johnstone says that she will tell someone what Mrs Lyons has done but Mrs Lyons takes control of the situation by saying that Mrs Johstone will get in trouble too.

He wants to be picked up

He doesn't want to be picked up

He's gonna cry

If he needs picking up, I shall pick him up

I'm sorry

We think it would be better if you left

Police visit Mrs Johnstone and she gives a locket

A policeman comes to see Mrs Johnstone because Eddie, Mickey and Linda are caught throwing stones through windows. The policeman's visit to Mrs Johnstone is completely different to his visit to Mr Lyons. He acts completely differently with Mrs Johnstone as she is working class. When speaking to Mrs Johnstone there is a clear lack of respect as he swears, has an aggressive attitude and makes what Mickey did seem terrible. With Mr Lyons, he is respectful, speaks to him kindly and makes what Eddie did seem not that bad. The next scene is Mrs Johnstone giving a locket to Eddie containing a picture of her and Mickey. This is given to Eddie to remind him of Mickey and Mrs Johnstone as Eddie is moving away. This scene shows how Mrs Johnstone is a natural mother as she comforts Eddie by hugging him and letting him cry - maternal instinct.

He was about to commit a serious crime

We're moving

Begins to cry

She takes him, cradling him, letting him cry

Buy a house near us

She removes a locket from her neck

In the kitchen with Mrs Lyons

In this scene, Mrs Lyons appears in Mrs Johnstone's kitchen after they have moved to the same area. This is very strange behaviour. She starts to bluntly ask her abrupt questions which is intimidating, intense and demanding and would be a very uncomfortable situation for Mrs Johnstone. Mrs Lyons is implying that Mrs Johnstone followed the family and she also thinks that Eddie may know who his real mother is. Furthermore, she is not letting Mrs Johnstone answer any of these questions and won't let Mrs Johnstone say that Mrs Lyons' accusations are wrong. Again, Mrs Lyons is using money to take control of the situation and try to get Mrs Johnstone to stay away. Then, her aggressive and manic side is shown as she tries to stab Mrs Johnstone. It is clear in this scene that Mrs Lyons has turned to superstition as she is losing control of Edward and of her mind.

Mrs Lyons appears in the kitchen                        Has a lethal looking kitchen knife in her hand

How long have you lived here                              I curse the day I met you

I didn't follow                                                       Witch

He'll always remember you

Is it money you want

You'd just follow me again

Reveals the truth

The final scene is when Mrs Johnstone reveals the truth of Eddie and Mickey being twins. This enrages Mickey as he thinks that he could have been the one that had the rich lifestyle that Eddie had. The scene ends with Mickey lashing out as he gets angry, he ends up shooting Eddie which results in the police shooting Mickey.

Don't shoot Eddie

He's your brother

You had a twin brother

I coudn't afford to keep both of you

Why didn't you give me away

I could have been him

Blows Edward apart

Blowing Mickey away
