First time seen with Mrs Johnstone
Mickey comes back home from playing 'mounted police an' indians.' You can see from this scene that he has a lively, fun and loving relationship with his Mum. However, he doesn't do as he is told and doesn't like injustice. We can see that his role model is his brother Sammy as he says 'I wish I was our Sammy.' In this scene, Mrs Johnstone tells Mickey off for going to play near the big houses - she doesn't want him to see Edward. She doesn't want Edward and Mickey to meet.
Will y' open the bleedin door
Did you think it was the rent man
Mounted police an' Indians
Near the big houses in the park
Stay outside where I can see you
I wish I was our Sammy
Meeting Edward
As soon as they meet, they are instantly comfortable with each other. They have the same sense of humour and laugh at all the same things. At the start of the conversation Mickey asks Edward for sweets and he offers him some, Mickey is shocked as he is not used to having sweets because of his working class background. There is a real contrast in the characters as Mickey uses bad language which Edward has never heard of and says he will 'look it up in the dictionary.' Mickey has a poor education as he doesn't know what a dictionary is. Also, he has a knife at the very young age of seven which really emphasises the negatives of the working class background. Having a knife relates to the theme guns and violence.
He is bright and forthcoming
Gis' a sweet - are you soft?
Exploding in giggles
Cos I'm p****d off
Like the f' word - pardon?
Two of them immediately wriggle and giggle with glee
Don't you know what a dictionary is
Mickey at school
Compared to Edward, Mickey has a bad education and clearly doesn't listen in class. We can see from the school class scene that the teacher doesn't like him and bullies him in class. It looks like he is the class clown and easily gets in trouble. Again, Linda sticks up for Mickey as she always does and decides to tell him that she loves him. Their behaviour in the class results in them being suspended from school. This scene shows us that they do not have the best education system.
What?
I don't know
Looks about for help
Fish fingers
It's borin
Out!
Take no notice Mickey, I love you
You're both suspended
Christmas
Mickey is aged 18 and is dating Linda who is now pregnant. They are also married and unfortunatley Mickey has been made redundant. We again see the contrast in the characters of Mickey and Eddie as Eddie is having an amazing life whilst Mickey has no job and no money. They are beginning to grow apart. When Edward returns home, him and Mickey have an argument were Mickey states that Eddie 'doesn't understand.' Mickey has had to grow up to support himself but Edward doesn't need to as he has the support of his parents who can easily provide him with money.
Where's the action
What's wrong - nothin
You don't understand anythin' do y'
I've got money - plenty of it
Look, look, money lots of it
I don't want your money
I suppose you still are a kid
While no one was looking I grew up
You didn't need to
Out of prison
When Mickey is in his mid twenties, he is released from prison. He takes anti - depressants which he started to take when he was in prison. Linda is trying to get him to stop taking them but this results in arguments as he is determined to keep taking them. Mrs Johnstone sings ' you'd think he was dead.' This shows us how much the anti - depressants and time in prison has changed him. The song she sings tells us that there is no hope and emphasises that Mickey is completely different from before. Linda has gone behind Mickey's back to get a house and a job for Mickey, she got help from Edward.
I'm takin' me tablet
They're just junk
Leave me alone will y'
You'd think he was dead
No cause for dancing
Is that it then
Are y' gonna stay on them forever?
We see Linda mutely hand Mickey her bag7
Mickey I can't even see you
End scene
Mickey is told by Mrs Lyons that Linda and Edward have been together, she hints that they have had an affair. Mickey is very annoyed, he tried very hard to not take the tablets but he was too late. He goes home to get a gun and this is where the song 'Madman' is sung which increases the tension of this scene showing that the devil is close. Mickey confronts Eddie and asks whether his child is Eddie's - 'as well as everything else.' Mickey's hands are shaking as a result of not taking his anti - depressants. He ends up shooting Eddie after finding out that they are twins.'I could have been him.'
Just one thing I had left - Linda - an' I wanted to keep her
So, so I stopped takin' the pills
But it was too late
Does my child belong to you as well as everything else?
You!
I could have been him!
The gun explodes and blows Edward away
Blowing Mickey away
