Traditional focus of economic activity was in 'metal bashing' maufacture of wide variety of metal products (screws and nuts and bolts) to jewelley, firearms and vehicles

  • Many trades have declined and faced deindustrialisation
  • Several initiatives to provide job oppurtunities as part of restructuring Birmingham and immclude greater emphasis on knowledge economy

Stakeholders - University of Birmingham, Birmingham City Council, Bio Hub - Edgbaston Medical Quarter; Queen Elizabeth Hospital University's College of Medical and Dental Science

  • Designed to attract research led compnies to work in partnership

Nature of firms; developing innovative products; close links with academic research required

Accomodation for new businesses; flexible, e.g. small sized units for start up firms and room for expansion during growth. Biotechnology included specific laboratory conditions e.g. sterile maufacturing environments.
