Localisation of Function Study

KRUPA ET AL. & THE RABBITS

  • conditioned rabbits to blink in repsonse to a sound
  • gave them a drug which temporarily stopped the action of the cerebellum
  • the rabbits could not carry out the conditioned response 
  • once the drug had worn off, the rabbits could carry out the conditioned response again 

SHOWS THE CEREBELLUM IS INVOLVED IN SIMPLE MEMORY TASKS.

PETERSON ET AL. & THE NOUNS

  • activity in the left hemisphere of the brain was studied
  • participants were asked to carry out 3 separate tasks on 3 different occasions

TASK 1

  • listen passively to a list of nouns which used Wernicke's area

TASK 2

  • think of verbs to attach to the nouns (eat a cake) which used Broca's area

TASK 3

  • silently read the list of nouns which used Broca's area

SHOWS THAT DIFFERENT AREAS OF THE BRAIN ARE INVOLVED WITH DIFERENT ASPECTS OF LANGUAGE.
