• Produced by anaerobic fermentation
• Mainly produces methane
• Large scale = Industrial waste can be used, from sugar factories and from sewer works
• Small scale =  supply energy for individuals, farms and villages
• Organic waste can be used by plant waste from crops and animal faeces/urine
• Many microorganisms involved in breakdown of material in biogas production
• Works better in warm climates

Advantages

• Useful way to recycle
• Fuel readily available
• Useful in poor countries
• Reduces use of fossil fuels
