diet and energy

balanced diet is key to keeping healthy, and the diet needs to contain some of these nutrients:

carbohydrates, fats and protein for energy

small amounts of vitamins and mineral ions for keeping healthy

without a balanced diet, you may become malnourished

metabolic rate - rate at which chemical reactions take place in your cells

can be affected by genes - inherited from parents

higher the metabolic rate, the better - increases through excercise

fatty foods - one gram of fat releases twice as much energy as one gram of carbohydrate

proteins used for functions of growth and repair - not very often used for energy, but they can be

high blood cholesterol levels - increases risk of developing plaques in artery walls

blood clots can arise from built up plaque in the arteries - can lead to heart attacks

eating saturated fats raises blood cholesterol levels

unsaturated fats can reduce blood cholesterol levels

low-density lipoprotein (LDL) - cholesterol which is 'bad' and can cause heart disease

high-density lipoprotein (HDL) - cholesterol which is 'good' - can protect against heart disease by helping to remove cholesterol from the walls of blood vessels
