Root hair cell

root hair cell

  • Increased surface area so it can absorb water and ions
  • Large permanent vacuole affects movement of water from soil to cell
  • found close to xylem tissue that carries water to the rest of the plant

palisade cell

Palisade cell

  • Column shaped cells can be packed tightly
  • at upper surface of leaf at the top its packed with chloroplast for photosynthesis

xylem cell

Xylem cell

  • transport water and minerals through the plant
  • cells are long with no cytoplasm so more water can get through

nerve cell (neurones)

Nerve cells

  • elongated cells that can carry impulses long distances throughout the body
  • dentrites on each cell can make a connection to many other neurones
  • Myelin sheath insulates one axon from another

egg cell (ovum)

Egg cell

  • The egg cell is the largest cell found in the human body
  • A large cytoplasm with food stores for developing an embryo before it implants on the wall of the uterus

sperm cell

Sperm cell

  • the nucleus contains DNA from the male parent
  • the long tail means it can swim to the egg
  • the middle section contains mitrochondria giving the sperm cell energy to reach the egg
  • the acrosome contains the digestive enzyme to break down the walls of the egg

red blood cell

Red blood cell

  • No nucleus so that there is more room for maemaglobin
  • the haemaglobin carries oxygen around the body
  • the concave disc shape gives the cell a large surface area to volume ratio so the oxygen can enter and leave quickly

white blood cells

White blood cells

  • white blood cells can change there shape to move out of the cappilaris and in between tissues such as the lungs
  • white blood cells engulf and digest microbes that enter the body
15 of 16

Fat cell (adipocyte)

Fat cell

  • A fat cell is a storage cell for exess food which is converted into fat which is used when food is in short supply
  • a small volume of cytoplasm leaves for room for the storage of fat
  • only a few mitrochondria are within the cell because the cell does not use alot of energy
  • fat cells are expandable as they fill with fat
